Daniel Bivens

I began teaching First Aid/CPR classes for The Red Cross in Spokane, Washington in 1976. I did so in support of a co-ed Explorer Scout Post, in which I was a Co-Advisor. I fell in love sharing my learned skills and have been teaching them to others for most of my years since! I have taught for not only The Red Cross, but also The American Heart Association, and an organization called IEESA – an Outdoor Survival and Safety School. I was a co-founder of this program. When I moved to Olympia in 2013, I let all of my teaching credentials expire and was no longer affiliated with either service. My days of volunteering did not end though!
After retiring, I started volunteering as a receptionist at South Bay Fire Department in northeast Olympia and eventually became one of the districts’ Fire Commissioners. This led me to becoming involved with other organization, including Thurston County Medic One. At Medic One, I learned about their CPR/AED program for citizens, and right away I began working toward becoming a part of it. At this time in my life, I am back to teaching as many classes as can get on my schedule and am trying to become recertified to teach with The Red Cross once again. This will allow me to teach the First Aid programs as well. So, I look forward to seeing many of you in these classes too! Help support Daniel, the Chapter and your family by attending this training.

Jim Elsner

When I was 49 years old, I had a significant heart attack. One that I should have died from but didn’t. I had a stent put in and about five months later had a 5-way bypass surgery. I spent the next nine years trying to regain some of the heart function that I lost with drug therapy like ace inhibitors and beta blockers, etc. I also got a pacemaker/defibrillator, because my heart rate was so low. Finally, in January of 2011 my heart nearly gave out. I spent 2 weeks in Providence Hospital on a dopamine and dobutamine drip. Unfortunately, whenever they tried to wean me off these drips, I went into heart failure. My cardiologist and I had a long talk and it was decided to send me to the UW Heart Institute in Seattle where they had more “tools in the box”. At UW I had an LVAD Heart Pump put into me. That truly saved my life, and I remained on the LVAD for 23 months. On December 23, 2012, I got the greatest Christmas present you can get, a heart transplant. I look forward to sharing with all of you, my journey from heart failure to a second chance at life on May 14th.

Follow-up on Questions asked at Member Meeting

Can calcium supplementation impact LDL:

Calcium supplementation (1200mg/day) showed modest improvement in LDL though it is recommended to utilize dietary calcium.

The reason: Despite the modest lipid-lowering effect, The MESA study found calcium supplements have been associated with potential cardiovascular harm (increased coronary artery calcification), which complicates their use for lipid management.

Recommendation: If requiring calcium supplementation for bone health, dietary sources are preferred over supplements when possible. If supplements are necessary, combining calcium with vitamin D may partially offset cardiovascular risk.

Can warfarin and CoQ10 be taken together:

Warfarin and CoQ10 can be used together but please alert the coagulation clinic about the supplement. As sometimes CoQ10 may mildly reduce warfarin’s anticoagulant effect. That would prompt the anticoagulation team to test and adjust warfarin if needed.

Summary of Meeting

PowerPoint Presentation

Hi, I’m Suzanne Upfield, MSN. I am the Heart Failure Program Coordinator for Providence Health in the Southwest Washington area, and I’ve spent more than 25 years working in cardiac care—14 of those focused on heart failure. I hold a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on Clinical Leadership. Over the years I’ve worked closely with Providence leadership and our cardiology team to build a program that truly supports patients living with heart failure. What drives me is helping patients and families feel empowered to take charge of their heart health. I’m excited to share some insights with you today and hopefully give you tools that make a real difference.
